Midnight Musing: Great Lake Swimmers

For me the Great Lake Swimmers is a band that I'll forget how much I love.  I've listened to them for a couple of years now but sometimes they slip through the cracks of my musical sidewalk.  The lead singer, Tony Dekker has a great folk voice that pulls you right into the song.  Great harmonies and meaningful lyrics combine to make a great band worth checking out.  They hail from Canada and have been playing since 2003.

Their latest album, Lost Channels was released in 2009 and is a great addition to any indie folk collection.  Pulling on a Line is one of my favorites.  Push play and soak it in.

Be all that you can be.

Film School

Film School is a band that is close to my heart since they are from the beautiful bay of San Francisco. I discovered them via last.fm (a site like pandora, but better) and would suggest it to anyone that likes having the interweb find you new music. They just released a new album titled "Fission" in August of last year and it is fantastic. I'm having a hard time describing their sound or thinking of bands that they remind me of, so just listen to it. Plus it doesn't matter, cause let's be honest, y'all just listen to the music w/o ever reading anything I write. So listen away, and let your ears take you away to world of joy and joyness.

"Compare" from their third album "Hideout." It is just one song of the many that I love on the album.
I don't always  post music to the interwebs,
but when I do it is amazing.

Midnight Musing: Bon Iver

So I've left Brett alone at the helm for too long but he's posted some pretty solid tunes and for that I applaud him.  Many apologies for the hiatus but i'm back now.

I'm not usually one to anticipate upcoming albums, mostly because I don't follow bands that closely but Bon Iver's latest album has got me all sorts of excited.  The album is set to be released June 21st.

The single "Calgary" has been released and it is fantastic.  Click the link for a free download of the song. Justin Vernon infuses some synths into the song which may or may not be representative of the rest of the album.

If you are not familiar with Justin Vernon's music then I would encourage you to dive in and if you already know him then I hope you're as excited about the new album as I am.

Neon Indian

Neon Indian is the creation of Alan Palomo from Texas. He describes his music as "childhood re-contextualized through a psychedelic, lo-fi filter. The idea of memory before you were old enough to have memories.” ... I have no idea what that means, but I think the synth-pop is pretty sweet. In particular I love this song called "Sleep Paralysist" and if you know me and my sleeping issues then you should understand why.

If you ever wake up and are unable to move and at the same time have hallucinations/visions of yourself dying/being killed then don't worry, it's probably sleep paralysis and not the devil trying to steal your soul.

Jaydiohead

Jaydiohead. The name says it all. Literally, it's a mixture of Jay-Z and Radiohead. Might sound like a weird combo, but I love it. It's the creation of Max Tannone, a producer/dj/remix artist based out of New York. You can get all of the music for free at his website, so check it out and spread the word.

"No Karma" is my favorite "mash-up" so far. It comes from my favorite Radiohead song (Karma Police), but jsyk there are some expletives. You are warned.

Mason Proper

Mason Proper was formed in Michigan in 2004. So they are far from new, but I stumbled across this video a couple years ago and for some reason that I can't quite explain have always liked it. It's kind of creepy, but I like the cinematography....in fact it's just plain weird, but give it a shot. Anyway, this song is called "Friendship" and if you listen to the lyrics you'll probably be glad he's not your friend...

Without further ado, Mason Proper.
